Lack of Remorse: Why Duterte does not deserve Sympathy
The Unearned Sympathy: Why Rodrigo Duterte's Plea for Pity Falls Flat
In recent times, a narrative has emerged, attempting to garner sympathy for former President Rodrigo Duterte. This narrative paints him as a victim, a man deserving of compassion. However, to entertain such a notion is to disregard the very fabric of his presidency, a period marked by relentless verbal assaults and a blatant disregard for human dignity, especially towards his political adversaries.
Let us recall the vitriol directed at Senator Leila de Lima. Duterte’s words, as documented, were not merely political criticisms; they were deeply personal and demeaning. He publicly humiliated her, even while she was detained, demonstrating a level of cruelty that should not be forgotten. His own words, "It takes two to tango. If you insult me, you will be insulted," and "Endure it. You insulted the Philippines with drugs right inside the National Penitentiary," reveal a man unwilling to engage in respectful discourse.
His attacks extended beyond de Lima. He routinely mocked and belittled his critics, showing no restraint. His behavior was not confined to political opponents; he even dared to blaspheme against the divine, indicating a profound lack of respect for established norms and beliefs.
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, while the nation grappled with fear and uncertainty, de Lima criticized the perceived inaction of the government. In response, Duterte mocked her suffering, stating, "We're enjoying the times of our lives, you know. Singing sometimes, singing loving. You, who are imprisoned, endure it." This callousness, while people were dying, is a stark reminder of his priorities.
De Lima's plea for him to focus on the nation's crisis rather than his personal vendettas was met with further disdain. Her words, "Have mercy on the people because their loved ones are dying from COVID," and her urging to "focus on his job rather than criticizing her," were ignored.
The attempt to portray Duterte as a figure deserving of pity is a disservice to the countless individuals who suffered under his reign. His actions speak louder than any carefully constructed narrative. The lesson here is not one of sympathy, but a stark reminder that hubris often leads to downfall. As the saying goes, "Pride goes before a fall." Even those who believe they are untouchable are subject to the consequences of their actions.
Let us not forget the past, for it is a crucial guide to the present and future. Instead of succumbing to manufactured sentimentality, we should reflect on the importance of accountability and the enduring value of respect and dignity in leadership.
