Grilled Siomai: The Unique Culinary Delight from Barangay Caniogan, Pasig City

This siomai is not fried or steamed but grilled! Yes, grilled siomai is taking the local food scene by storm with its distinct smoky flavor and delicious taste.

The idea of grilled siomai originated from the brother of Pao and Jobelle, the entrepreneurial couple behind this innovation. The concept first took off in Laguna and Binangonan before the couple decided to bring it to their locality. Upon tasting it, they were excited to introduce this unique twist to their community.


Pao and Jobelle did not hesitate to start their grilled siomai business. With an initial capital of 20,000 pesos, they purchased a cart, griller, raw products, and other necessary items. Their siomai, priced between 28 to 33 pesos for four pieces, comes in various flavors including pork, beef, Japanese, and shark fin.

Initially, the siomai is steamed before being grilled to perfection. Customers are often surprised by this grilling process, which enhances the flavor, making it more appealing. Depending on the heat, the grilling time can vary, but the result is always a delicious, smoky treat.


Adding to the appeal is their special homemade sweet sauce with mayonnaise, garnished with spring onions. Unlike the usual soy sauce and chili garlic oil, their sauce is a combination of sweet and spicy flavors that complement the grilled siomai perfectly.

Apart from selling siomai a la carte, they also offer siomai with java rice and iced tea for just 50 pesos, a perfect budget meal. Their popularity has spread beyond their immediate neighborhood, with orders coming in from various places and even companies requesting deliveries.


Whenever there's a basketball game in their barangay, they strategically move their cart near the court. This move alone allows them to sell up to 40 kilos of siomai and earn around 10,000 pesos. They've also catered to birthday parties with a package deal costing 6,000 pesos, feeding up to 150 people.


Pao focuses on growing their business while Jobelle continues to work as a customer service representative. However, if their business continues to thrive, Jobelle plans to join Pao full-time. Their future goal is to establish a permanent stall for Siomay Yarns. Currently, they earn 2,000 to 3,000 pesos daily, which has allowed them to renovate their house and cover daily expenses and bills.
